String of Flukes Led Brittany Akers to Law School

Brittany Akers '24 describes her professional life as a string of serendipitous flukes. Those flukes led her to the U.S. Coast Guard, then to Carolina Law, and now to a role as a senior staff attorney and lieutenant commander in Portsmouth, Virginia.

The Sold-Out Festival 

This year's Festival of Legal Learning sold out. More than 140 alumni spent a Friday in February learning Supreme Court litigation strategy on a live case, hearing from two mayors about what federal bureaucracy looks like when disaster survivors are waiting, and getting put on notice by Dean Emeritus Martin Brinkley that no one in the room was safe from a cold call.

Career Trek Takes Students to New York 

Charlie Armstrong had never been to New York City before October 2025. Lauren Daukaus grew up there. After two days meeting with attorneys at some of the biggest firms on Wall Street, they reached opposite conclusions about their futures, and both were exactly right.
