{"id":2981,"date":"2026-03-16T10:05:54","date_gmt":"2026-03-16T14:05:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/magazine.law.unc.edu\/march-2026\/?p=2981"},"modified":"2026-04-01T09:27:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-01T13:27:07","slug":"alumni-return-to-chapel-hill-to-celebrate-excellence-at-carolina-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/magazine.law.unc.edu\/spring-2026\/alumni-return-to-chapel-hill-to-celebrate-excellence-at-carolina-law\/","title":{"rendered":"Alumni Return to Chapel Hill to Celebrate Excellence at Carolina Law"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Nearly 170 alumni and friends of UNC School of Law returned to Chapel Hill on October 3, 2025 for an evening that captured what makes the School\u2019s community special.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTonight is a time for Carolina Law alumni and friends to come together in celebration and support of our alma mater,\u201d Brian Meacham \u201903 told the audience. \u201cAs president of the <a href=\"https:\/\/law.unc.edu\/alumni\/unc-law-alumni-association\/\">Law Alumni Association<\/a>, it\u2019s an honor for me to recognize the remarkable achievements of some of the very best in our legal community.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The annual Law Alumni Association Awards Ceremony at the Carolina Club honored eight members of the community who have made their mark on the legal profession. Award recipients ranged from the class of 1959 to the class of 2021.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was truly a privilege to be in a room with such successful and inspiring people, all of whom went to Carolina Law,\u201d said third-year law student and Student Bar Association President Madeleine Calick. \u201cWe were all connected through our law degrees, and it made me feel like anything was possible.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The evening revealed how those connections shape careers across generations. Judge Carl Fox \u201978 and Judge Richard Myers \u201998, both honored as Distinguished Alumni, credited fellow award recipients Justice Henry Frye \u201959 and Judge David Sentelle \u201968 as influential mentors in their careers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese enduring relationships and the dedication of our people to helping and serving others are at the core of Carolina Law,\u201d said Interim Dean <a href=\"https:\/\/law.unc.edu\/people\/andrew-hessick\/\">Andy Hessick<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hessick also noted how Carolina Law graduates go on to shape communities around the world, \u201cproviding services that form the legal scaffolding supporting innovation, commerce, development, and justice.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ceremony honored three Lifetime Achievement Award recipients: Justice Henry E. Frye \u201959, Charles P. Brown \u201966, and Judge David B. Sentelle \u201968. Judge Carl R. Fox \u201978, Alison A. Grounds \u201901, and Judge Richard E. Myers \u201998 received Distinguished Alumni Awards. U.S. Army Captain Isabelle R. Stevens \u201921 was recognized as an Emerging Leader, and Professor Thomas Lee Hazen received the Professor S.
