{"id":550,"date":"2022-02-01T11:00:04","date_gmt":"2022-02-01T11:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/magazine.law.unc.edu\/july-2022\/?p=550"},"modified":"2022-06-30T12:05:14","modified_gmt":"2022-06-30T16:05:14","slug":"faculty-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/magazine.law.unc.edu\/june-2022\/faculty-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Faculty Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Six Carolina Law faculty members were recently recognized with awards for their demonstrated excellence in teaching, scholarship and service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#952e46\">Carolina Law Announces Annual Faculty Awards<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>UNC School of Law presented three <a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.unc.edu\/faculty\/awards\/\">awards<\/a> to distinguished faculty on Thursday, April 28, 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The awards presented include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Robert G. Byrd Award for Excellence and Creativity in Teaching, awarded to <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/law.unc.edu\/people\/holning-lau\/\"><strong>Holning Lau<\/strong><\/a><strong>, Willie Person Mangum Distinguished Professor of Law. <\/strong>The Byrd Award is named for Robert G. Byrd, an alumnus of the school who served as a member of the faculty from 1963 until 2004, and as dean from 1974-1979.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The James H. Chadbourn Award for Excellence in Scholarship, awarded to <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/law.unc.edu\/people\/erika-k-wilson\/\"><strong>Erika Wilson<\/strong><\/a><strong>, Professor of Law, Wade Edwards Distinguished Scholar and Thomas Willis Lambeth Distinguished Chair in Public Policy<\/strong>. The Chadbourn Award is named for James H. Chadbourn, editor-in-chief of the <em>North Carolina Law Review<\/em> in 1930-1931, a member of the Carolina Law faculty from 1931-1936, and a co-author of leading texts in civil procedure, federal court and evidence. In 1933, while at UNC, Chadbourn bravely authored a controversial work titled &#8220;Lynching and the Law.&#8221; This award honors a faculty member&#8217;s distinguished law journal article. Wilson was recognized for her article, &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/harvardlawreview.org\/2021\/05\/monopolizing-whiteness\/\"><em>Monopolizing Whiteness<\/em><\/a>, 134 HARV. L. REV. 2382 (2021).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Charles E. Daye Award for Excellence in Service, awarded to <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/law.unc.edu\/people\/andrew-hessick\/\"><strong>Andrew Hessick,<\/strong><\/a><strong> Judge John J. Parker Professor of Law<\/strong>. This award is conferred annually based on service performed within the two years prior to the year in which the award is given. McCall Award for Teaching Excellence. The award is named for Frederick B. McCall, who served on the Carolina Law faculty for more than 40 years. He was an outstanding scholar of property and estates law, a tireless contributor to the North Carolina General Statutes Commission, and a celebrated teacher. Upon his retirement in 1967, students established the McCall Award to be selected annually by members of the third-year class.The McCall Award is an annual award for outstanding teaching elected by the graduating class pursuant to the students\u2019 own rules and customs, and presented at commencement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Six Carolina Law faculty members were recently recognized with awards for their demonstrated excellence in teaching, scholarship and service.
